CHAPTER 10

Mr Thomson watched as the carriage with his friend receded from the Aveburyhill, travelling northward. It had not yet vanished from sight when he ordered to saddle up his horse and galloped in the direction of Wingfield Hall.

He had known Mr Howard his whole life, but in spite of it, the matter was of some delicacy, and Thomson had considered this visit carefully. Miss Howard had shown particular interest in Lord Ashdon, while the viscount just chased women for his own amusement. John felt it was his duty to caution his friend against the cad; however, he must do it without revealing Georgiana's attachment to the viscount to protect her reputation.

He was shown into the drawing room where Mr Howard and Miss Howard sat with their mother. They all had spent some time speaking of polite matters before Thomson asked his friend for a private audience.

They walked to the library, where Thomson began his tale concerning Lord Ashdon's true nature. As he proceeded, a dark cloud passed across Mr Howard’s countenance, and he started pacing in front of the fire.

"I have noticed the viscount's interest in Miss Howard," continued Thomson, "and I thought it best to caution you about him."

Surprised, Howard stopped his agitated movements and looked at the man, who met his gaze squarely. "You speak of it as if you cared not he was attached to Miss Darcy."

Now it was Thomson who looked startled. "How do you know he was attached to her?"

"Why, your wife told me," said he. "You must imagine my confusion when I saw him paying increasing attention to my sister as if Miss Darcy mattered not."

Thomson frowned. "Lord Ashdon attached himself to Miss Darcy without my approval. She is only eighteen, and her guardians are not present. Yet, the viscount cared not.”

“And you still did not throw him out of your house?”

Thomson swallowed, feeling another pang of guilt that would stay with him forever. “I know; the fault is mine. I neglected it, being too much concerned about the precautions of my possible actions as if his nobility blinded my senses.” He sighed and raked his fingers through his hair.

Howard took time to reflect on everything he had heard, then spoke, "I must say I am relieved," admitted he and sat across from Thomson. “Ashdon's interest in my sister bothered me, and now at least, I will be able to decline his acquaintance with her with a clear conscience. I only regret that we did not know his true character earlier."

"I suppose there was always some sort of gossip going about him in London, but I am rarely in town these days."

"Well, either way, I am glad you told me, John."

Thomson looked to be deep in thought before he spoke again. "If I may, I must ask you not to tell anyone about Lord Ashdon's attachment to Miss Darcy. The poor girl is really upset by all of this, and considering her guardians' absence, I cannot allow this to spread amongst society."

“I shall never mention her name; you have my word, John.
